There's no doubt about it, West Alameda has more
than its share of things to do and see. Here are a few of the things
that make the West End special.
Alameda
National Wildlife Refuge
(website) At the northwest corner
of the former Alameda Naval Air Station, this wildlife
refuge protects endangered Least Tern colonies and Brown Pelicans, while providing
nature education and recreation.
Alameda
Oakland Ferry(website) Take the ferry to the San Francisco
Ferry Building, Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf, or Oakland. Special
ferries visit Angel Island and take fans to AT&T Park for
Giants games. Give your out-of-town guests a treat or commute
to work or shopping..
Ballena
Bay Turn off Central at the Ballena
Bay signs, and you’ll find yourself next
to the Bay with fine walking trails, a Marina and spectacular views of the San
Francisco skyline.
Boat launching ramp The Encinal Boat
Ramp, off Central Avenue behind Encinal High
School, includes a free launching ramp, restrooms,
and automobile and trailer parking.
City View Skate Park If
you like skateboarding, you’ll love the volunteer-built skate park at
Alameda Point.
College
of Alameda
(website) Our own community college with a varied curriculum
including more than 300 liberal arts, science and technology
courses.
Crab
Cove (website) A unique Visitor Center, shoreline and wildlife habitat
for education and enjoyment.
Crown
Beach
(website) A 2.5-mile warm, shallow
beach, with sand dunes bordering a bicycle trail and
a bathhouse and changing rooms at the west end. Swimming, windsurfing, picnic
tables, barbecue pits and lawn area. The Sand Castle and Sand Sculpture Contest
is held here in June.
Farmers' Market(website) Year-round Farmers' Market at Webster
and Taylor offers freshly picked produce, baked goods, fresh
seafood, flowers, and other goodies weekly on Tuesday morning.
A second market is held on Thursday afternoons during the summer.
Lucky Ju Ju Pinball(website) Vintage pinball
machines and a monthly rotating art exhibit.

Marina
Village Yacht Harbor (website) Right along the Oakland Estuary,
the Marina Village Yacht Harbor offers 750 slips.
Naval
Air Museum (website) Visit the educational community
center at Alameda Point and learn how the Alameda Naval Air
Station served the nation during World War II, Korea, Vietnam
and Desert Storm.

rest happens here on Main Street. Stop in for a free

USS
Hornet Museum
(website) Come aboard the aircraft
carrier that served our country in World War II and recovered
the Apollo 11 and 12 astronauts, the first men on the
moon! Open daily at Pier 3 at Alameda Point.
Washington
Park, and other city parks (website) West Alameda has its share of
city parks. The largest, Washington Park, near Crown Beach,
has something for everyone: a playground, picnicking, tennis,
softball, soccer, horseshoe pits, basketball, volleyball – even
an off-leash dog park.
